TASHKENT CITY SOCIETY OF GREEK CULTURE

For the time of living in Uzbekistan the Greek diaspora made remarkable contribution to the economic and cultural development of their second motherland. The Greeks participated in developing of Hunger Steppe, they worked and still are working in the spheres of eco-nomy of the republic.
There was no issue to establish the Greek Cultural Center in Tashkent where the diaspora was concentrated because the society of Greek political emigrants existed even in 1964, and on March 4,1997 was reorganized into the Tashkent City Society of Greek Culture. The objective of the Society was to augment cultural heritage of the Greeks, preservation of the Greek language, tradi-tions, customs and ceremonies, development of inter-national relations.
Nowadays the Society continues its successful functioning: Sunday school for kids and adults for studying the Greek language was established, in 2001 the famous Greek vocal-instrumental ensemble "Buzuki" was revived; besides, recently was organized a new dance group "Sirtaki".
In special dance studios children learn the art of dan-cing of the Greek, Uzbek, Russian, Spanish and other peoples of the world. The Society organizes various sport competitions, trips and excursions to other cities of Uzbe-kistan in order to provide the young generation with greater possibilities to study and know better their se-cond motherland.
